| ROOT CROPSMy attempts to grow root crops by sowing seed in the open ground have either failed or germination has been erratic. Also, I think slugs and snails have eaten the seedlings as they emerge from the ground. Yet plot holders on each side of me seem to have no problems! It must be my sowing technique. Roots: Beetroot/Parsnip/Turnips/Carrots. For several years now I use a method which I think Monty Don suggested on Gardeners World. I start sowing around the first week in March in seed trays holding 40 modules, these results in large plugs which can be planted out without any root disturbance. Starting out in a cold greenhouse I use recycled tomato compost from the previous season to which I give a dusting of lime. Sowing three/four seeds to a module reducing to one plant, they are hardened off in a cold frame before planting out in evenly spaced rows. Carrots. These I sow in 10cm [4 inch] pots ,using recycled tomato compost to which I add 25% coarse sand. About 8/10 seeds to a pot these are thinned out to 4/5 carrots a pot eventually being planted out without any root disturbance. Like Fran and many others I grow under Enviromental plastic mesh to defeat the dreaded carrot fly.
